Is Functional Flow yoga for over 50s?

Yes. Functional Flow is for anyone over 40, so it suits people in their 50s and 60s too. It is a moving class built on everyday actions: bending, lifting, reaching, turning and getting up off the floor, practised with control and linked by the breath.

Functional means useful. The moves mirror real life, so the strength you build shows up at home, at work and in the garden. Flow means the class keeps moving, one move into the next, like a slower yoga flow.

After 40, strength, balance and mobility need a bit more attention than they used to. You do not need a gym for that. You need a regular class, done well, with a teacher who adapts it to you.

The class works for any age over 40, and every move has an easier option, so you can start where you are.

Emily also teaches Healthy Back, the men-only class, straight after at 8.15pm. So if there are two of you, you can both come on the same night. Tuesday is an easy drive from Navan, about 20 minutes away, and from Kells. See all our classes for more.

What you get from Functional Flow

  • Strength for everyday life: lifting, carrying, getting up and down.
  • Mobility in the hips, spine and shoulders.
  • Better balance and steadier feet.
  • A class paced for bodies over 40.
  • A small group of people at the same stage of life.

Is Functional Flow OK if I have not exercised in years?

Yes. That is who it is for. You start where you are, and Emily shows you how to make each move easier or harder. Tell her about any injury or health condition before your first class, and check with an appropriate healthcare professional if you need to.

Emily Stockley teaches Functional Flow. She has studied yoga and movement in Canada, the United States and Bali, and she has taught in studios, living rooms, squash courts, parks and even on wharves.

Her aim is to build the basic skills that keep you moving well, and the curiosity to keep going. Emily moved to Ireland in July 2026 and now calls Co. Meath home. Away from the mat she bakes cakes and spends as much time as she can with her family.

Questions about Functional Flow

Is this yoga for over 50s?

It is for everyone over 40, so yes, it suits people in their 50s, 60s and beyond. The class is built on yoga-style flow and strength work, and every move can be adapted.

Is Functional Flow the same as the menopause programme?

They are listed separately. Functional Flow runs now, on Tuesdays at 7pm, and is open to anyone over 40. The menopause programme is new, and its details are still being finalised. Message Fiona and she will tell you which suits you.

What does functional mean?

It means useful. The moves are based on everyday life, like squatting to pick something up, reaching overhead or getting up from the floor.

What if I have stiff knees or hips?

Tell Emily before class and she will show you other ways to do each move. If you have an injury or a joint problem, get advice from an appropriate healthcare professional before you start.

Is it a hard workout?

It is a steady one. You will work, but at your own level. Emily can make any move easier or harder.

How do I join?
