Yoga for beginners, retreats and more: ideas for moving and feeling better
Plain answers to the questions people ask before their first class, and after their hundredth.
New to yoga or Pilates? Start here.
Start with one beginners class a week and give it a few weeks. You do not need to be flexible, fit or experienced. Tell the teacher about any injuries, arrive a few minutes early and copy what you can. Rest whenever you need to.
That is yoga for beginners in a nutshell, and Pilates for beginners is no different. The hardest part is walking in the door the first time. After that, you take it one class at a time.
Before your first class
- Pick a small class, so the teacher can see you and help.
- Choose by how you want to feel: Pilates for strength and control, yoga for stretch and calm.
- Wear comfortable clothes and bring water. Fiona tells you if you need a mat.
- Message Fiona first about any injury, pregnancy or health condition.
- A taster or drop-in is available on request, if you want to try before a term.
Yoga or Pilates: which should a beginner start with?
Both build strength and body awareness, but the feel is different. Here is how to choose by what you want, not by what the names mean.
