Can a complete beginner join a yoga or Pilates class?

Absolutely. You do not need to be flexible, fit or experienced to start. Classes can be adapted to different abilities, and you are encouraged to work at a level that feels comfortable for you. Plenty of people feel nervous before a first class.

The thing that stops most people is the fear that they will not be able for it, or that yoga is not for them. This page walks you through a first class from start to finish, so there are no surprises.

Every class at Grá Wellness is small, and every teacher shows an easier option for each move. Fiona's own promise is simple: you will never feel uncomfortable.

Your first class, step by step

  1. Send Fiona a message

Text or WhatsApp 087 945 3758 with a line about what you are hoping for. Fiona replies with the classes that suit you and the start dates. She answers messages in contact hours: Mon to Thu 9 to 5, Fri 9 to 1.

  2. Book your place

Term classes are booked by message. Fiona sends the dates and the price, and you pay a deposit or the full term by payment link or bank transfer. Drop-in spaces and events are booked on BookingHawk. Taster or drop-in available on request.

  3. Pack a bag

Wear comfortable clothes you can move easily in and bring a bottle of water. If you need to bring your own mat or anything else, Fiona will tell you when you book. You do not need anything fancy, just come comfortable and ready to move.

  4. Arrive a few minutes early

Your teacher will show you where to go and where to leave your things, and help you get settled. Say it is your first time so you can be welcomed properly. Classes run at Grá Wellness Studio outside Athboy, at Athboy Community Centre and, on Fridays, in Wilkinstown. Fiona sends directions when you book.

  5. The first ten minutes

A quick chat before you begin, especially if you are new. Your teacher checks whether there is anything they should know that could affect your class, explains what to expect and helps you get comfortable with the space and the equipment. Then you start gently with a warm-up before the main class.

  6. During the class

Not knowing what you are doing is completely normal on a first night. Your teacher explains and demonstrates as you go, and you can take your time. Nobody expects you to know the moves or the words. In Fiona's classes there is music, and the class ends with some stillness.

  7. Tea after

When class ends, the kettle goes on. Most people stay for a cup and a chat, and it is the easiest way to get to know the group.

Should I tell Fiona about an injury first?

Yes. Please message Fiona before your first class about any injury, recent surgery, pregnancy or other health issue. Then you can talk about whether the class is right for you and any changes you may need.

Depending on your situation, you may also need guidance or clearance from an appropriate healthcare professional before taking part. Our classes offer the everyday benefits of yoga and Pilates: strength, flexibility, balance and a calmer mind. They are not a medical treatment.

First-class questions

I'm a complete beginner. Can I still join?

Absolutely. You don't need to be flexible, fit or experienced to start. Classes can be adapted to different abilities, and you're encouraged to work at a level that feels comfortable for you.

What should I wear and bring to class?

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely. Bring a mat if you have one, some water, and anything else your teacher recommends. Most importantly, come as you are. No fancy gear required.

I'm not very flexible. Will I be able for it?

This is probably one of the most common questions. You don't need to be flexible to do yoga or Pilates. Improving mobility, strength and flexibility can be part of the reason you come in the first place.

What's the difference between yoga and Pilates, and which one is right for me?

Both can help with strength, movement and body awareness, but the style and focus are different. If you're unsure which class would suit you, send Fiona a message and she'll happily point you in the right direction.

I have an injury or medical condition. Can I still attend?

Please get in touch before booking and let Fiona know about anything that may affect your taking part. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need guidance or clearance from an appropriate healthcare professional before taking part.

What if I don't know what I'm doing?

That's completely normal for a first class. Your teacher explains and demonstrates as you go, and you can take your time. There's no expectation that you'll know the movements or the terminology beforehand.

Can I try a class before I sign up for a term?

Yes. Taster or drop-in available on request. Message Fiona and she will tell you what is open.

Ready for your first class?

Send Fiona one line about what you are hoping for. She will take it from there.
