Yin yoga in Meath, for a body that sits all week
Long, quiet holds on the floor. Slow on purpose. The class for the commuter, the runner and anyone who finds it hard to switch off. Thursday evenings at 7.30pm.
What is Yin yoga?
Yin yoga is a slow style of yoga where you hold passive poses, mostly on the floor, for a few minutes at a time. The long holds stretch the connective tissue and bring deep relaxation. It is the quiet partner to faster classes.
In most classes your muscles do the work. In Yin you let them go. You settle into a pose, soften it if you need to, and stay. Minutes pass. Slowly, the hips, the lower back and the legs start to let go.
It is harder than it sounds, because the mind wants to move on. That is the point. You practise staying with a feeling that is a little uncomfortable, breathing, and not rushing to fix it. Most people leave slower than they came in.
Thursday at 7.30pm gives you time to get home from work and out again. Navan is about 20 minutes away, so it suits people from Navan and Kells as well as Athboy. Want more? See all our classes.
What you get from Yin yoga
- A deep, slow stretch for the hips, hamstrings and lower back.
- Time to slow down on purpose, once a week.
- More range of movement, built gently over time.
- A quieter mind. The long holds give your thoughts time to settle.
- A good balance to running, gym work, sport or a long drive.
Is Yin yoga good for beginners?
Yes. There is no flow to keep up with and no tricky balances. You get time to find each pose and you can soften any of them. The hard part is staying still, and that is new for almost everyone.

Who teaches Yin yoga
Thursday evenings are taught by Fiona or Amy. Fiona founded Grá Wellness and plans each class around the people in the room. Music matters to her, and so does the stillness at the end.
Amy found yoga a few years ago, and it took her all the way to Bali for her teacher training. She loves nature and adventure, and she believes yoga does not need to be serious or scary. Her aim is that you leave a little lighter than you came.

From the second you walk in the door the relaxing smells, sounds, lighting and Fiona’s open welcome envelop you before class even begins. Such a safe, peaceful, personal space to have those couple of hours to relax in each week. As a newbie to Yoga. Yin and restorative yoga have been the best experience I’ve done for me. I’m only sorry I had not discovered it years ago. Thank you Fiona

Questions about Yin yoga
How long do you hold a pose in Yin yoga?
Usually a few minutes. Your teacher guides the timing, and you can come out of a pose early whenever you need to.
Is Yin yoga the same as restorative yoga?
No, though they feel alike. Yin puts a gentle stretch into the body and asks you to stay with it. Restorative uses lots of support so there is almost no stretch at all, just rest. We run restorative once a month on a Friday evening.
Is Yin yoga good for runners?
It is a good match. Running tightens the hips and legs, and Yin gives them a long, slow stretch. If you are carrying an injury, check with an appropriate healthcare professional first and tell your teacher before class.
What if a pose feels too strong?
Ease off. In Yin you look for a mild stretch, never pain. Your teacher will show you a softer version, and you can come out of any pose at any time.
Do I need to be flexible for Yin?
No. Stiff is normal. You work to your own edge, not anyone else's.
