What to expect on a yoga day retreat in Ireland
A day retreat gives you the reset of a retreat without the flights, the hotel bill or a week off work. Here is how a day usually runs, what to bring and what to ask.

Message FionaA retreat does not have to mean a week away. A day retreat gives you time to slow down in a few hours, close to home, with no packing and no flights. Here is what a yoga day retreat in Ireland usually involves, based on how we run our retreat days at Killua Castle, about ten minutes from Athboy.
What is a yoga day retreat?
A yoga day retreat is a retreat without the overnight stay. You spend a morning or a full day with a small group, doing gentle yoga, walking, eating well and resting. You go home the same day, calmer, with nothing to unpack.
It sits between a weekly class and a week away. A class gives you an hour. A day retreat gives you enough time to really slow down, without the cost and planning of travel.
That is a big part of why Fiona runs them. A night or two at a retreat venue in Ireland can cost a lot, and not everyone can get away for a week. A day close to home is easier to fit around work, family and everything else.
What happens on a yoga day retreat?
A day retreat usually follows a gentle rhythm. You arrive and settle in, move through a yoga class, get outside for a walk and share a meal. The day ends with a slower practice and a rest. Tea and chat fill the gaps.
Every retreat is different, and Fiona shares the plan for each one before you book. As a guide, a full day often runs like this:
- Arrive and settle. A cup of tea, a chat and time to find your spot.
- Move. A yoga class to wake the body up, pitched so beginners can join in.
- Get outside. An easy walk, at a pace where you can still talk.
- Eat. A proper meal, shared, with time to sit and chat.
- Slow down. A slower practice, such as restorative yoga, breathwork or a guided relaxation.
- Close. A few quiet minutes before you head home.
A morning retreat is a shorter version of the same idea. Our morning retreat at Killua Castle ran for about three hours. One guest, Tina, described it in her Google review:
"Fiona guided us perfectly throughout the morning including a board walk before brunch, beautiful morning finished off with chats and wholesome food, most importantly lovely company."

Fiona's teaching style carries through the day. Expect music, a little poetry and real stillness at the end. There is no chanting, and you work at a level that feels comfortable for you.
What food is served on a yoga day retreat?
Food is part of the day. A day retreat usually includes tea and a shared meal, such as brunch or lunch, with time to talk. Check what is included before you book, and mention any allergies or food needs early, not on the day.
Eating together is a big part of what makes a retreat feel different from a class. On our Killua morning, brunch came after the walk, and the morning finished with chats and good food. Fiona confirms what each retreat includes when the date is set.
If you are coeliac, vegetarian or vegan, or you have an allergy, say so when you book. It gives time to plan.
What should you bring to a yoga day retreat?
Bring comfortable clothes in layers, a warm top for the relaxation, a rain jacket, shoes you can walk in and a water bottle. Fiona tells you when you book if you need your own mat. Leave the laptop at home.
- Layers. You warm up when you move and cool down fast when you lie still.
- A warm jumper and thick socks for the relaxation at the end.
- A rain jacket and comfortable shoes for the walk. Irish weather can change in an hour.
- A water bottle, to keep you going between cups of tea.
- Your own mat, but only if Fiona asks you to bring one.
- Anything you need for your health, such as medication.
Put your phone on silent. A few hours without it is part of the point.
Who goes on a yoga day retreat?
All sorts of people, and you do not need any yoga experience. Most who come to ours are women over 35, and many already come to our weekly classes. Men are very welcome too. If you can manage a gentle class, a retreat day is well within reach.
Our first Killua morning filled mostly by word of mouth. That meant many people already knew someone there. If you are coming on your own, tea breaks and a shared meal make it easy to chat. You will not feel like the new person for long.
If you have an injury or a health condition, message Fiona before you book. Depending on your situation, you may need clearance from an appropriate healthcare professional first. Most poses have a gentler version, and you can rest at any time.
How much does a yoga day retreat in Ireland cost?
Prices vary with the venue, the length of the day and the food. What you pay usually covers the teaching, the venue and your meal. Before you book, ask what is included and how the deposit works. Message Fiona for the price of our next day.
Here is how it works at Grá. When a retreat date is set, Fiona sends the price, what it includes and how to hold your place. Places are limited, so it pays to ask early.
A day retreat also makes a thoughtful gift. We do gift vouchers, so message Fiona if you would like to treat someone.
Why choose a day retreat close to home?
Because you get the reset without the travel. There are no flights, no packing and no days off work, and you can be home for dinner. For many people, a day retreat is also the easiest way to try a retreat before booking a week away.
When you are ready for sun and a few nights away, we also run small-group retreats abroad, from €699. Our guide to yoga retreats abroad from Ireland covers flights, seasons and the questions to ask.
What is the day retreat at Killua Castle like?
Our day retreats take place at Killua Castle, a restored castle and private home near Clonmellon, about ten minutes from Athboy. Visitors usually see it only on a booked tour, so a retreat day is a rare chance to spend a slow morning on the grounds.
Killua sits just over the Westmeath border, near Clonmellon. The castle is a private residence, and the owners permit guided tours only (Killua Castle). The grounds take in parkland and a lake.
We run day retreats there about once a season. The next one is planned for October 2026, and the date, price and plan are being finalised. See our page on day retreats at Killua Castle, or message Fiona to hear first.
Want a taste first? Fiona also runs Soulful Yoga at Killua Castle one Sunday morning a month.
